The month February was named from the Latin term "februum" meaning purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15th (full moon) in the old lunar Roman Calendar. Traditionally, the original Roman calendar was 10-months long starting with March, and winter was considered a month-less period. In 713 BC, the successor of Romulus, King Numa Pompilius, is supposed to have added the months of January and February, so that the calendar covered a standard lunar year. February remained the last month until the time of the decemvirs (c. 450 BC), when it became the second month.
February is the last of the winter months meaning it is still cold outside, however the snow will be starting to melt and warmer temps are on the horizon.
